MFS0035 Stikine Glacier Icefields-PAJN-PF20

Description:

MFS0035 Stikine Glacier Icefields

The route of this trip is from Juneau Alaska (PAJN) to Misty’s Place (PF20) via the Stikine Glacier Icefield Stations. The eleven glacier ice station airfields straddle the US-Canadian border east of Petersburg (PAPG) and west of Bob Quinn Lake (CBW4) in British Columbia.

The Stikine Icecap (sometimes referred to as the Stikine Icefield) is a large icefield straddled on the Alaska–British Columbia boundary in the Alaska Panhandle region. It lies in the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains. Within the United States, most of it is under the administration of the Tongass National Forest and is part of MENthe Stikine-LeConte Wilderness within the national forest.

A good size icefield, the icecap is a primary source for both the Taku River, which forms its northern boundary, and the Taku's southern tributaries, and also the Stikine River and its lower western tributaries, notably the Chutine, which form its southern and southwestern boundary, respectively. The Stikine Icecap is the parent icefield of the LeConte and Sawyer Glaciers on its US side, and the Great Glacier on its Canadian side. Also on the Canadian side and entering the lower Stikine, like the Great Glacier, are the Mud and Flood Glaciers, which form the boundaries of the small Boundary Range, which is an eastern abutment of the range comprising the Stikine Icecap and marks the approximate boundary claimed by the United States prior to the Alaska Boundary Settlement of 1903.

The Stikine Icecap area is also renowned for its technically demanding and dangerous peaks and spires of granite that have garnered comparisons as North America's version of Patagonia. Peaks of particular renown include Devils Thumb, Witches Tits, Cat's Ears, and the Burkett Needle.

Previously, in FSX and P3D we had RTMM scenery for the SIRP Ice Stations, now thanks to Karl-Heinz Klotz we have these eleven (ST01 through ST11) Stikine Glacier Ice Field stations in MSFS.

These are not easy landings or approaches by any means so recommend an overhead pass to establish your best approach for landing.

To assist in your navigation, feel free to use NDB that have been located at each Ice station.

The Excursion:
This excursion is intended to be a low level flight excursion with multiple stops at the SIRP Ice Station locations: all of which are on glaciers and at higher altitude so a ski or tundra wheels in a STOL type aircraft that can handle higher altitudes is recommended.

Aircraft:
STOL Type aircraft: Beaver, Kodiak, Caravan C208, Savage/NX/Monster Cub, etc.
The airports are all land base but the Ice stations are short in length. For the most part, there are also helipads or open field locations to land a helicopter.
As always, please use your aircraft of choice and if required you can change to an alternate aircraft (for every leg if you want) via the cigar box aircraft section.

SIM/ICAO Capability:
MSFS, FSX and P3D (all versions).

Time/Weather:
If possible try live time and live weather. If not possible set your own weather and time parameters and enjoy the scenery.  (Dawn or Dusk are the nicest times to fly and can yield very pretty and interesting lighting effects).
